Panoramic View of Studio from Last Week While Grinding Towards Exhibition

Over the course of the past month, I’ve been working towards the opening of the Hypertension exhibition at Wayne State University. I was asked by co-curators Tom Pyrzewski and Beverly Fre$h to produce a new installation for the show.

On or around March 28th of this year, I set this as my daily schedule:

  1. Wake at  3:50am.
  2. Work until about 5pm.
  3. Return to the studio for about an hour and a half in the early evening.
  4. Asleep by 9:30pm.

I’m a morning person, and my schedule reflects this. My studio being situated in Cranbrook also necessitates a “counter-punchers” approach to production. In order to maximize productivity around here you really must work while others sleep. The panoramic photograph above is from a typical day late in the process. At the point this photo was taken, there were probably ten discreet components of the installation in process. My studio clearly reflects the chaos of the days leading up to the opening.

“God” from Hypertension Exhibition at Wayne State University

A considerable portion of my recent work with objects has been inspired (in part) by the Cranbrook grounds and the architecture of Eliel Saarinen. Cranbrook is populated with a number of decorative bronze sculptures. Nearly all of the figurative bronze work at Cranbrook is by the sculptor Carl Milles. While beautiful, from a contemporary perspective, much of this figurative work can almost seem ridiculous.

It’s precisely these characteristics that seem to present possibilities to me. Part of my goal with this work was to re-examine this tradition of mythologically inspired figurative sculptural objects. I fully realize the absurdity and potentially rediculous nature of the “Bust” as a platform for conceptual investigation. But it’s this “exhausted” form that seems rich with possibility.
