Can understanding how synthesizers like the Minimoog and Nordlead shape sound help distinguish between “good” and “bad” in contemporary art? The “Earls ADSR Synthesis Model For The Evaluation of Works of Visual Art” is a tool to help the studio artist critically assess works of visual art. Issues of value and quality are notoriously problematic terms particularly as they pertain to the humanities. In a very real way, without the capacity to determine quality — to separate good from bad — the contemporary studio artist is lost. Criteria and critical tools are more important in the artist studio than the paint brush. The Earls ADSR Model can be used in the studio, critique room, gallery or museum.
In Episode 30 of Elliott Earls Studio Practice we take a look at the concepts of attack, decay, sustain and release in order to gain a deeper understanding of quality in works of contemporary art. Everything discussed in Episode 30 of Studio Practice is with the intent of making better art and design.
The Earls ADSR Model is described in detail. How can Kanye West’s “Sacramento Rant” and subsequent “meltdown” help us separate the good from the bad when approaching contemporary art? What can we learn from Francis Bacon’s MEDITATIONES SACRÆ and American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce’s concept of signs and categories? Ignorance is not bliss.
