The first exhibition in the newly renovated and expanded Cranbrook Art Museum explores Cranbrook’s continued influence in the world of contemporary art and design. No Object is an Island: New Dialogues with the Cranbrook Collection Opened November 11, 2011. The images above are from my installation for the exhibition. The exhibition paired the work of 50 leading contemporary artists and designers with an equal number of objects from Cranbrook’s outstanding permanent collection of 20th- and 21st-century art and design. I was asked to continue to develop my piece “Elegy for the Collapse of the Empire” for the exhibition. My installation incorporated Rembrandt Peale’s Portrait of George Washington, and paired it with my recent interpretation of this work.
