Part 1 | Artist Funds Museum Installation Daytrading Against Hurricane Harvey | Episode 51

A Detroit artist trades natural gas futures during Hurricane Harvey to finance a major museum Installation. In this episode, we take a look at disaster capitalism and art making. “Parafiction #1 Disaster Capitalism and Dismantling Beauty,”

In Donald Trump’s America we live in a parafictional universe.

From www.eventualepisteme.wordpress.com regarding parafiction:

“Parafiction is an experiment with truth. It is the production of possibility by way of producing plausible alternatives to accepted truths, beliefs, discourses, and ideologies through disruption and subversion. It is the creation of fictions that read as fact by way of the insertion of the virtual into the actual, and the actual into the virtual. A successful parafiction is post-simulacral in that it is as real as—more real than—the real, without a representational origin and produced without fixed materiality; perhaps even preferable to apparently fixed knowledges and discourses that popular ideologies portend are causes of the political effects subjects must navigate. Parafiction is fundamentally transparent.

As Lambert-Beatty writes in “Make Believe: Parafiction and Plausibility”:

(…) a parafiction is related to but not quite a member of the category of fiction as established in literary and dramatic art. It remains a bit outside. It does not perform its procedures in the hygienic clinics of literature, but has one foot in the field of the real. Unlike historical fiction’s fact-based but imagined worlds, in parafiction real and/or imaginary personages and stories intersect with the world as it is being lived. Post-simulacral, parafictional strategies are oriented less toward the disappearance of the real than toward the pragmatics of trust. Simply put, with various degrees of success, for various durations, and for various purposes, these fictions are experienced as fact.”
