Performance has been a cornerstone of Elliott Earls work. In 1991 when Elliott was in graduate school, he began experimenting with early forms of “new media.” These experiments gained momentum in the mid 1990’s after he was fired from the Art Department at Elektra Records. With “nothing to lose, and almost no prospects for a successful career.” Elliott proposed a recurring performance series to Kristen Marting, Director of HERE. HERE The Indepent Art Center is an important performance space in Soho, NYC. Elliott went on to perform once a month for six months at HERE. This was the beginning of a series of performances in locations from Berlin to Maine. These early experiments with performance became an important component of Elliott’s work.
